December 29, (THEWILL) – The Ekiti Election Petition Tribunal has upheld the victory of Biodun Oyebanji of All Progressives Congress (APC), in the June 2022 governorship poll of the state.

In a judgement on Thursday, the Tribunal dismissed the petition of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate, Segun Oni.

Oyebanji had polled a total of 187,057 votes to defeat his two closest rivals, Oni, who polled 82,211 votes and Bisi Kolawole of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with 67,457 votes.

Oni, on July 7, filed a petition at the tribunal, challenging the declaration of the APC candidate, Oyebanji, by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as the winner of the election.

He had alleged election rigging by voter inducement and bypass of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) at some polling stations; the authenticity of the WAEC certificate presented by the Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Monisade Afuye, among other grounds.

However, the judgement read by the Chairman of the ElectionTribunal, Justice Wilfred Kpochi and a member of the Panel, Justice Sa’ad Zadawa, resolved all issues in contention against Oni and his party, SDP.

The Panel held that the petition filed by Oni against the return of Oyebanji and Afuye respectively, “failed woefully head or tail.”
