June 27, (THEWILL) – President of the European Club Association, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, has called for increased investment in women’s football, foreseeing remarkable growth for the sport.
Speaking at the ECA Women’s Football Summit in London, Al-Khelaifi, who also serves as the president of Ligue 1 champions, Paris Saint-Germain, harped on the need for greater financial focus and investment in women’s football. He said: “If we’re all together we can achieve much better results, we are much stronger. I promise, as ECA chairman, on behalf of the entire board and management that we are committed to women’s football. We see the growth and we see, if we are together, the growth will be amazing.”
Sarai Bareman, FIFA’s chief of women’s football, on her part, highlighted the significant progress made in the women’s game, particularly since the 2019 World Cup. Leagues and clubs in Europe have been providing more opportunities for the world’s best players to earn a full-time living from football through professional structures, allowing them to experience conditions similar to their male counterparts.
Bareman shared her optimism that the upcoming Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand will be a landmark moment in the development of women’s football. With its unique features, such as 32 participating teams, co-hosting by two countries across two confederations, and the event taking place in the Southern Hemisphere and the Asia Pacific region for the first time, the tournament aims to attract two billion viewers worldwide and expects 1.5 million spectators in stadiums.
