November 11, (THEWILL) – Girona came from behind to win 2-1 away at Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, continuing their unlikely charge at the top of La Liga.

Rayo took an early lead through Alvaro Garcia’s fifth-minute goal, threatening to halt Girona’s recent momentum. However, strikes from Artem Dovbyk and Savio on either side of the break completed the comeback for Michel’s high-flying side.

The result marked a fifth consecutive league victory for the Catalan club, who have lost just once all season. Girona now sit five points clear of second-placed Real Madrid, who have a game in hand against Valencia on Saturday evening.

There were plenty of chances at both ends in an end-to-end contest at Estadio de Vallecas. Girona racked up an astonishing expected goals total of 4.64, while Rayo generated 1.69 as the teams combined for 41 shots.

Girona’s latest comeback means they have now won 16 points from losing positions this term – more than any other La Liga side. They will look to continue their title push at home against Athletic Bilbao after the international break.
