August 20, (THEWILL) — Sean “Diddy” Combs could face renewed legal attention over the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur if Duane “Keffe D” Davis is convicted in the ongoing case.
Davis, a former member of the South Side Compton Crips, is on trial in Las Vegas for allegedly helping plan the drive-by shooting that killed Shakur.
Prosecutors allege that Davis planned the attack after Shakur and his associates assaulted his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, at the MGM Grand earlier that night.
Davis is not accused of firing the shots that killed Shakur. Prosecutors, however, allege that he helped organise the attack and supplied the gun used in the shooting.
He has pleaded not guilty and now disputes some of his past statements about the killing. His defence team has argued that Davis exaggerated his role to gain fame and money.
Prosecutors have relied on some of Davis’ previous statements, including a 2008 police interview and his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend. A Nevada judge ruled in July that the police recording could be used as evidence in the trial.
The recording has also brought Combs back into the spotlight. Davis reportedly claimed that Combs offered him $1 million to kill Shakur.
However, Combs has never been charged over the allegation, while Shakur’s family has hired a lawyer to investigate the claims independently.
Combs has described the claim as “pure fiction and completely ridiculous”. He has repeatedly denied any involvement in Shakur’s murder, and police have not named him as a suspect in the case.

The alleged payment is not the main focus of Davis’ trial. Prosecutors have largely kept the claims about Combs out of the case, apparently to avoid distracting the jury from the evidence against Davis.
The trial is the first criminal case brought against anyone over Shakur’s murder. The rapper was shot in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, and died six days later at the age of 25. Davis is currently the only person charged in connection with the killing.
The case has also brought fresh attention to the 1990s rivalry between Combs’ Bad Boy Records and Marion “Suge” Knight’s Death Row Records. The two labels were at the centre of the wider East Coast-West Coast hip-hop feud.
Legal experts say a conviction could encourage prosecutors to look more closely at Davis’ claims and any new evidence that emerges during the trial. However, a conviction would not prove that Combs was involved or automatically lead to charges against him.
Combs is currently serving a 50-month federal prison sentence after being convicted on two counts of transportation for prostitution. His current sentence is unrelated to Shakur’s murder.
For now, Combs remains uncharged in connection with Shakur’s death, while Davis’ trial continues in Las Vegas.
