December 10, (THEWILL) – Luis Diaz has sustained a fresh knee injury during Liverpool training and is expected to undergo surgery.
Diaz, who has not played since first injuring his knee in early October, recently complained of pain once more just as he seemed to be getting closer to a potential return, according to Reds’ manager, Jurgen Klopp. The Colombian will need surgery to fix the most recent problem, which might keep him out of action for an additional three months.
It was thought that Diaz’s medial collateral ligament was the source of his initial problem, but this most recent lesion is to his lateral collateral ligament. This is a huge setback for Liverpool, who had hoped that Diaz would be fit enough to play in their friendly at their training camp in Dubai this month.
A further three-month absence would prevent Diaz from returning until the end of March, possibly missing another 12 Premier League games, but he might be ready to play against Manchester City on April 1, at the Etihad Stadium.
Darwin Nunez joined Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah to outstanding effect on the left side of Liverpool’s attack as a result of Diaz’s absence, just before the Premier League was suspended for the World Cup.
