July 03, (THEWILL) – There was a massive upset at Wimbledon on Saturday, when Iga Swiatek, the world number, was eliminated in the third round by Alize Cornet.
After Steffi Graff’s 66-match streak in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Swiatek entered No. 1 Court hoping to extend her winning streak to 38 games. If she succeeded, that would have moved her up to second place all-time. But, she ran against a Frenchwoman in a determined frame of mind, as Cornet won 6-4 6-2, to set up a matchup with Ajla Tomljanovic in round four.
Early on, Swiatek appeared irritated, and the world No. 1’s unexpected temperamental display—a kick of her racquet—came as a surprise. The French Open champion was seen chuntering toward her box as the wind blew and Swiatek missed break points in the fourth game.
As incredibly skilled as the Polish player was, Cornet proved to be just as mentally tough and she finally got her chance to take a win after four attempts. Although nerves might have been a factor, she was able to finish the victory over an apparently unfocused Swiatek.
