Confusion, Anxiety Over Old Naira Notes Rejection In Owerri Despite Supreme Court Order

February 12, (THEWILL) – There is a palpable confusion and anxiety in Owerri, Imo State capital, as many residents in the metropolis have refused to collect old Naira notes from their customers, despite the Supreme Court order.

THEWILL gathered that most business operators in the state had started rejecting the old naira notes, opting for new ones, therein, throwing the residents into panic.

It was also discovered that motorcycle operators, also known as ‘okada’, fuel stations, commercial drivers and shopping malls, have been requesting for the scarce new currency from their customers.

Traders at Ekeukwu, Relief, Nkwor-Orji and World-bank markets were said to have not been collecting the old Naira from their buyers on the grounds that it is no longer a “legal tender.”

In a press interview with a fuel station supervisor, who pleaded not to be mentioned on print, attributed the current crisis to the inability of the Apex bank to curb the situation at the initial stage.

“I have ordered my staff to stop accepting the old Naira note from buyers”, he said.

Recall that even as the Supreme Court had ordered the Central Bank to extend the February 10 deadline over phasing out of the old Naira, the order hit a brick wall.

Even as at the time of filing these reports, the apex bank were yet have issued a Press statement on whether the old Naira notes remain a legal tender or not.

Meanwhile, the Central Bank and Federal government appear to be at loggerheads over the February 10 deadline shifting, but the general public can be said to have lost grip on positions of the notable personalities that could ease the tension.
