August 24, (THEWILL) — Security operatives comprising personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS), other security agencies and local vigilantes have rescued a 29-year-old kidnap victim and neutralised two suspected members of a kidnapping syndicate in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.
The DSS disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen in Owerri on Sunday, saying the successful operation followed the abduction of the victim, identified as Ibeabuchi Adibenma, by armed assailants in the area.
Adibenma was kidnapped at about 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18, around Afor-Ogidi Market in Isiala Amaifeke community, Orlu.
According to the DSS, the victim was returning from Umuna, Orlu market, when the armed men intercepted his vehicle near the market.
The attackers, who were operating on two motorcycles, reportedly double-crossed the vehicle before forcing Adibenma to an undisclosed location.
After the abduction, the kidnappers contacted members of the victim’s family and demanded ₦15 million ransom for his release.
The demand triggered efforts by security operatives to locate the victim and track down the abductors.
Two days after the abduction, on August 20, security operatives launched a coordinated operation involving DSS personnel, other security agencies and local vigilantes.
The DSS said the operation led operatives to Ihioma Community in Orlu, where Adibenma was successfully rescued.
The operation, however, ended in a gun battle that left two suspected members of the kidnapping syndicate neutralised.
“Two suspected members of the kidnapping syndicate were neutralised during the operation, while two high-calibre weapons and ammunition were recovered”, the DSS said.
Following his rescue, Adibenma was taken into protective custody before being reunited with his family.
The DSS commended the participating security agencies and local vigilantes for their cooperation and coordinated efforts in securing the victim’s release.

The latest operation comes against the backdrop of persistent security challenges in parts of Imo State, particularly the Orlu axis, where residents and motorists have faced threats from kidnapping and other forms of violent crime.
