October 28, (THEWILL) – The Coalition of Ethnic Nationalities in Nigeria has lauded the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, over move to redesign the naira notes.

THEWILL reported that the CBN, on Wednesday, announced the approval by President Muhammadu Buhari, to redesign the N100, N200, N500, and N1000 notes.

Expressing their support for the CBN governor, the coalition, in a press briefing in Abuja, on Friday, condemned calls for Emefiele’s sack over his initiative to redesign the notes.

They described politicians against the move as agents of vote buying, whose agenda was targeted to truncate free and fair poll in the 2023 general elections.

Also, the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) on Thursday, expressed support for the CBN’s initiative.

In a statement by its Secretary General, Chief Willy Ezugwu, CNPP said, “Only politicians who intended to buy votes” and other equally ill-motivated elements would criticise CBN’s action.

Meanwhile, Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, has reiterated his support for the CBN’s decision.

Bawa said some persons were hoarding and using the country’s currency to speculate on the foreign exchange (FX) market.

Former President and Chairman, Governing Council, Association of Corporate Treasurers of Nigeria (ACTN), Zeal Akaraiwe, described the decision of the CBN as the solution needed to bring in large amounts of cash into the banking system and enhance the effectiveness of the apex bank’s monetary policies.
