July 30, (THEWILL) — Chelsea have strengthened their defensive options by completing the signing of France international Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in a transfer reportedly worth £52 million.

The 26-year-old centre-back has put pen to paper on a long-term contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032, becoming one of Xabi Alonso’s key additions as the Blues continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new campaign.

Lacroix spent just one season at Crystal Palace after arriving from German club Wolfsburg in 2024, but his impact was immediate.

He featured in 55 matches across all competitions and played an important role in Palace’s successful UEFA Conference League campaign, helping the club secure the first major European trophy in its history.

His strong club performances also earned him a place in France’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he made three appearances, including the third-place play-off against England as Les Bleus finished fourth.

Speaking after sealing the move, Lacroix expressed his excitement about beginning the next chapter of his career.

“I’m really proud and really happy to be part of this project. I can’t wait to start playing. I believe we can create something special here, and I’m excited to play my part in that journey.”

Chelsea’s latest acquisition continues an active transfer window under Alonso.

Lacroix follows the arrivals of Morgan Rogers and Marco Palestra, while Geovany Quenda and Emmanuel Emegha have also officially joined the club after previously agreeing to transfers.

The Blues will be hoping Lacroix’s athleticism, defensive awareness, and experience at both domestic and international levels provide greater solidity at the back as they target a return to competing for the Premier League title and major European honours.

With pre-season preparations continuing, Chelsea fans will be eager to see how quickly the French defender settles into Alonso’s system and whether he can become a cornerstone of the club’s long-term ambitions.
