February 14, (THEWILL) – The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said that there was no need to shift the February 10, 2023 deadline of the old N200, N500 and N1000 banknotes.

Recall that the apex bank had fixed February 10, for the old banknotes to seize being legal tender, but an interim order of the Supreme Court restrained the Federal Government and the CBN from effecting the directive, pending the outcome of a case filed by the Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara State governments.

But in an update on the availability of the redesigned naira notes, CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, said the rowdy situation at the banks has reduced since the commencement of over-the-counter payments to complement ATM disbursements and the use of super-agents.

He insisted that there was no need to shift the deadline.

Emefiele spoke on Tuesday, during a visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday,

“The situation is substantially calming down since the commencement of over-the-counter payments to complement ATM disbursements and the use of super-agents.

“There is, therefore, no need to consider any shift from the deadline of February 10″, he said.

He also said that Point-of-Sale agents, who charge above N200 for cash swap will be arrested and jailed when caught.

The CBN governor further said that the PoS operators can come to the CBN to be compensated for any extra cost incurred in getting the new notes rather than charging a higher fee on customers.
