BEVERLY HILLS, December 22, (THEWILL) – The English Football League has pushed back the date for the 2020/2021 Carabao Cup final. In moving the fixture from February to April, the EFL is hopeful that more supporters will be allowed into Wembley on the new date to watch the game live and in-person.
Initially scheduled for February 28, the final is now set to be played on April 25, with kick- off set at 4pm. The EFL statement confirming the decision read:
“It is the objective of the League to stage the final with as many supporters in attendance as possible and the decision has therefore been taken to move the final from its original date of Sunday 28 February 2021 to later in the year.
“The number of fans permitted will be dependent on Government guidance in place at the time and it is hoped that moving the date to later in the year will give clubs and their fans the best opportunity to attend in person.”
This is coming on the heels of the recent government introduction of new tier- four coronavirus restrictions in large parts of south-eastern and eastern England over the weekend as spikes in new cases provide cause for worry.
In tiers three and four, spectators are not allowed to attend matches.
The quarterfinals of the competition get under way on Tuesday with Brentford hosting Newcastle United and holders Manchester City at Arsenal.
Wednesday’s games include Championship side Stoke City at home to Tottenham Hotspur while Everton host Manchester United at Goodison Park.
