Canadian Women Players Secure Interim Deal For 2023 Compensation

July 28, (THEWILL) – The Canadian women’s national team has achieved an interim agreement with Canada Soccer to secure compensation for the year 2023, according to statements made by the players on Friday.

This significant development comes at a time when the governing body is facing financial limitations. However, the men’s national team has expressed concerns, asserting that they have yet to receive payment for their participation in the 2022 World Cup and are now facing pressure from the soccer governing body to accept an inadequate deal. The women’s team has lamented the tough choices they have been forced to make, balancing compensation with the funding required for essential training camps and striving for equal treatment and pay compared to their male counterparts.

The newly reached agreement includes a portion of the prize money from the ongoing Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Despite this progress, the players have conveyed their disappointment in not achieving a more comprehensive deal at this crucial juncture. They emphasise that they remain steadfast in their commitment to equal pay and equitable treatment alongside the Men’s National Team.

The players acknowledge that certain aspects of the agreement are still open for future negotiation, but they have worked diligently to ensure that, at a minimum, their compensation is on par with their male counterparts, taking into consideration Canada Soccer’s current financial situation. Moving forward, both the women’s and men’s teams are determined to find a long-term solution that not only addresses fair treatment for the current National Teams but also invests in the future of Canadian football. However, for the time being, the focus remains on football as the team competes in the Women’s World Cup.

Currently standing in second place in Group B of the Women’s World Cup, the Canadian team’s journey continues with their upcoming match against co-hosts Australia, who hold the third spot in the group. The match, set to take place on Monday, will be crucial for Canada’s bid to progress to the knockout stage of the tournament.
