August 08, (THEWILL) – Ese Brume, Nigeria’s long jump queen, has won the gold medal in the Women’s long jump event at the ongoing Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG).
With her 6.99-meter leap at the Alexander Stadium on Sunday night, Brume also surpassed the competition record of 6.97 metres, set by Bronwyn Thompson. The Nigerian, who also triumphed in the long jump at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, failed on her opening try with a no jump.
However, dusting herself off, she jumped to a new Games record of 6.99m on her second attempt. But, she was not done. And, like her compatriots have done throughout the Games this year, Brume surpassed the new games record she had just set with a 7.00m leap on her fifth and final attempt.
She, therefore, added to Nigeria’s gold medal haul bringing in the 12th gold medal overall as she displayed it proudly in her position at the top of the podium.
With Brume gold, Nigeria has now won more gold medals than it did in 1994, when it won 11 in its best outing at the Commonwealth Games.
