August 23, (THEWILL) — Brighton opened their Premier League campaign with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Aston Villa, producing a devastating first-half performance at the Amex Stadium.
The hosts needed only eight minutes to take control when Maxim De Cuyper’s effort ended up in the net after taking a deflection off Victor Lindelof.
Brighton doubled their advantage 10 minutes later. Georginio Rutter created space behind the Villa defence before cutting the ball back for De Cuyper, who finished from close range to score his first Premier League goal.
Villa struggled to cope with Brighton’s movement and attacking pressure, and the situation became even worse after the half-hour mark.
De Cuyper’s delivery was worked back across goal by Diego Gomez, allowing Jack Hinshelwood to tap in Brighton’s third.
Hinshelwood struck again just a minute later after Yasin Ayari won possession inside the Villa penalty area. The midfielder made no mistake with the opportunity as Brighton moved 4-0 ahead before half-time.
Villa’s nightmare opening continued when Joao Gomes was dismissed in the 40th minute.
The Brazilian midfielder, already booked earlier in the match, kicked out at Rutter. The referee initially allowed play to continue before a VAR review resulted in a straight red card.
With Villa down to 10 men and four goals behind, the contest was effectively decided before the break.
Brighton were unable to add to their tally after the interval, but they comfortably controlled the second half and completed a memorable opening-day victory.

The defeat represents a difficult beginning for Emery after Villa enjoyed an impressive campaign last season.
Villa finished fourth in the Premier League before winning the Europa League, securing European football and raising expectations around the team.
However, several members of that successful squad have departed or could still leave during the transfer window.
Ollie Watkins has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, while Emiliano Martinez’s future is also uncertain. Villa have already lost other important players, increasing the pressure on Emery to rebuild his squad.
