March 01, (THEWILL) – The two chambers of the National Assembly on Tuesday rejected the clause seeking to make Value Added Tax (VAT) an item on the Executive Legislative List.
The development followed the presentation and voting on the report of the committee on constitutional review on the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Presenting Clause 34, a “Bill for an Act to Alter Part I of the Second Schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to include Value Added Tax on the Exclusive Legislative List; and for Related Matters and approve the recommendations therein,” members of the upper Legislative chamber vetoed the clause.
41 senators voted in support while 44 senators voted against it.
in the same manner, the House of Representatives voted 209—91 against an attempt to move VAT from the concurrent list to the exclusive list.
