September 15, (THEWILL) – Barely 24 hours after the fire outbreak at the Kainji/Jebba 330 kilovolt (KV) line, which triggered the collapse of the national grid on Thursday morning, a similar incident has occurred on Thursday night, at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) substation in Birnin-Kebbi, Kebbi State.

The immediate cause of the incident has not been ascertained as of the time of filing this report, but it was gathered that a loud bang was heard at the TCN station, located behind the Mechanic Village in Birnin Kebbi metropolis.

The transmission station supplies electricity to Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara State.

Kaduna Electric, an electricity distribution company that serves Kaduna, Kebbi State, Sokoto State, and Zamfara State, confirmed the incident.

The DisCo, in a public notice signed by its Head of Corporate Communications, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, explained that the fire incident severely damaged key infrastructure at the transmission centre.

The statement reads: “The Management of Kaduna Electric regrets to inform its valued customers in parts of Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara States that the power outage currently being experienced is a result of the unfortunate fire incident that gutted some critical power supply infrastructure at the Transmission Works Centre in Birnin Kebbi last night.

“Our counterparts from TCN are assessing the extent of damage to commencing necessary repair works. We deeply sympathise with the management and staff of TCN over the unfortunate development.

“We regret all inconveniences which the unintended service disruption has caused our customers.”
