August 14, (THEWILL) – The African Union (AU), on Monday, held talks on the ongoing political impasse in Niger.

“AU’s Peace & Security Council meets to receive an update on the evolution of the situation in Niger and the efforts to address it,” the Union said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The meeting, held in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, was attended by the AU Commission, Chief Moussa Faki Mahamat, as well as representatives from Niger and the West African bloc ECOWAS.

The meeting was held to review developments in Niger, following the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum given to the military junta to restore constitutional order in Niger.

The AU’s Peace and Security Council had, in a communique issued at the end of its meeting held on Friday, July 29, on the Niger coup, “demands the military personnel to immediately and unconditionally return to their barracks and restore constitutional authority within a maximum period of 15 days.”

The junta had, on July 26, sacked President Mohamed Bazoum as President.
