November 30, (THEWILL) – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will hold a crucial National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Saturday, December 3rd, 2022.

The meeting, scheduled to be held at the University of Calabar, is expected to take decisions affecting members’ welfare.

The NEC meeting is coming amid controversy over the demand for an 8-month salary, covering the period the lecturers were on strike.

The Federal Government, during the strike, declared a “No Work, No Pay” policy.

ASUU, on October 14, suspended the eight-month strike declared on February 14, 2022.

The Federal Government had, in line with its “No Work, No Pay” policy, paid ASUU members half their salary for the month of October 2022.

In a statement signed by the Head of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Olajide Oshundun, the Government explained that lecturers were paid their October salary pro-rata because they cannot be paid for work not done.

THEWILL earlier reported that the Federal Government on Wednesday paid November salaries to members of ASUU.

Some of the lecturers who confirmed receipt of an alert from their banks, however, noted distortions.

A senior lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt forwarded the bank alert to his chairman and complained about the amount he received for November salary.

“I have been a professor for 13 years. This is my salary for November 2022. I do not have any loan obligation(s). This is the level we have descended to as hardworking citizens, yet our President can afford to go on foreign trips to take care of his health. Let me state this once more, this country is sitting on a keg of gunpowder”, he noted.

ASUU Lagos Zone Coordinator, Dr Adelaja Odukoya, said, “But for curious reasons, the salaries went down for some. Trying to get more details. It is the IPPIS effect.”
