February 20, (THEWILL) – According to a recent report, veteran Real Madrid midfielder, Luka Modric, has been presented with the opportunity to join manager, Carlo Ancelotti’s coaching staff, should he decide to retire this summer.
Having played a reduced role under Ancelotti over the past year and a half, making just 11 La Liga starts this campaign, the 38-year-old’s illustrious playing career with the Spanish giants appears to be coming to a close when his contract expires in a few months. However, Modric has never indicated plans to retire just yet, openly stating his desire for more playing time this season.
The report claims Ancelotti first proposed the idea to Modric around two months ago, but the Croatian initially declined, citing his intention to continue playing beyond the current season. The offer apparently still stands, but Modric is not considering it at this time, as his focus remains on prolonging his playing days.
Modric is said to be willing to postpone a final decision on his future until the summer, after representing Croatia at the 2024 European Championships, wanting to avoid distractions ahead of his likely last major tournament with the national team.
While an extension with Real Madrid has not been completely dismissed, it seems unlikely given the club’s evolving tactical direction that does not best accommodate Modric’s strengths anymore. The veteran has previously drawn interest from Saudi Arabian clubs and boyhood team Dinamo Zagreb.
