August 19, (THEWILL) — Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has identified Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey as a potential future leader, praising the Nigerian’s quality, personality and attitude since taking charge of the Premier League club.
Arbeloa, who was appointed Fulham manager ahead of the 2026/27 season, has quickly developed an appreciation for Bassey’s qualities and believes the 26-year-old has the character required to take on greater responsibility within the squad.
The former Real Madrid defender has also been impressed by Bassey’s ability to combine his defensive qualities with the physical attributes needed for the high defensive line he wants Fulham to operate.

“Calvin is a proper player. He has everything. He’s a really funny guy, but when we have to work, he’s the first one,” Arbeloa said.
The Fulham boss then made an even bigger statement about the Nigerian’s leadership potential.
“I really love Calvin. He can be our leader,” Arbeloa added.
Bassey’s growing influence has already been reflected in Fulham’s pre-season preparations, where the Nigerian defender was trusted with the captain’s armband.
Although that does not automatically mean he will become the club’s permanent captain, it represents a strong indication of the confidence Arbeloa has in him.
Bassey joined Fulham from Ajax in 2023 and has since established himself as an important member of the squad.
His pace, strength and versatility have made him a valuable defensive option, while his experience with the Super Eagles has given him further exposure to high-pressure matches.
The defender was also part of Nigeria’s squad that finished as runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, adding international experience to his growing Premier League profile.
For Arbeloa, however, Bassey’s value appears to extend beyond what he contributes on the pitch.
