November 06, (THEWILL) – With a convincing 4-1 victory over Southampton at St. Mary’s, Newcastle moved into third place in the English Premier League with Miguel Almiron once more on the scoresheet.
Almiron’s clinical strike in the 35th minute gave Newcastle the lead in what was his eighth goal in as many Premier League games.
That opener was significant for the Magpies as substitutes Chris Wood, Joe Willock and Bruno Guimaraes added to the scoreline in the second half to give Eddie Howe’s team a comfortable victory on the south coast. However, Romain Perraud soiled Nick Pope’s clean sheet when fired a composed strike into the top-right corner to make it 3-1 before Guimaraes made it four.
With the win, Newcastle extend their winning streak to nine games and move ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, ahead of Spurs’ fixture against Liverpool later on Sunday, into third place in the standings.
On Wednesday, action resumes in the League Cup competition with both Newcastle and Southampton involved. At St. James’ Park, Newcastle take on Crystal Palace as Southampton host Sheffield Wednesday.
