July 09, (THEWILL) – The Chairman of the Ethical and Attitudinal Reorientation Commission (EARCOM), Dr. Dorothy Thompson, has lauded the wife of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Dr. Martha Udom Emmanuel, for her transformational initiative in empowering young women.
The commendation came during a chat with newsmen in her office in Uyo while appraising the grand flag-off of the First Lady’s “Get A Skill Initiative,” aimed at training and empowering the younger generation of women.
According to Thompson, the event that held at Ibom Hall, Uyo, with the theme, “Building a Sustainable Future through Skills Acquisition,” with over 2,000 female youth from the 31 local government areas of the state, represented a watershed in the determined quest by the Governor’s wife to achieve the maximum empowerment of the female gender.
While applauding the First Lady for what she termed “her extraordinary efforts in making women count in the society” and reducing unemployment in the state, the EARCOM boss also thanked the Udom Emmanuel-led administration for providing a conducive environment for the womenfolk to thrive and for supporting the efforts of the First Lady’s pet project.
She maintained that the Governor’s wife stands tall in her grassroots-oriented programmes, which are making much impact.
She encouraged the First Lady to keep on with the good work and called on the women and female youth to continue to support and pray for their benefactor as well as for the success of the Completion Agenda of the Governor.
Thompson, who extolled the “Get A Skill” programme, described it as transformational, while also enjoining the beneficiaries to ensure they lived up to expectations, and maximise the opportunity to acquire relevant vocational skills that could make them become independent entrepreneurs and job creators rather than beggars.
She argued that achieving entrepreneurial skills will help the female youth to become wealth creators and not engage in social vices such as drug abuse, prostitution or begging, nor become vulnerable to sex trafficking, rape and gender-based violence.
Thompson explained that her own agency, EARCOM, would reinforce the campaign for socially responsible citizens and reach out to the female youth structure in the state to imbibe the campaign against social vices.
THEWILL recalls that while declaring the training programme open, the wife of the Governor had said the skills acquisition programme would be done in batches, and train and empower over 5,000 young women in various fields and also showcase their talents to the world.
The First Lady disclosed that the training would focus on sought-after skills such as fashion design, bead making, agro-production, ICT, interior design, etc., and it would afford the young women opportunities to secure a better future in the digital economy.
