February 01, (THEWILL) – The killing of a Police Inspector, identified simply as Osang, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, has generated tension among residents of Enen Afaha Itam.

Although facts surrounding his death are misty, a source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the incident occurred at about 8:30 pm on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.

He said the assailants, numbering over 10, stormed the residence of the victim located on a lane linking Enen Afaha and Afaha Ube, a suburb within the Uyo metropolis, the eventful evening to reign havoc, shooting sporadically while residents and passersby scampered for safety.

According to him, the middle-aged police officer was killed and beheaded in his residence to the amazement of neighbours and everyone in the state.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Odiko Mac-Don, who confirmed the incident, said the Command has received the news of the murder of the policeman, describing it as very unfortunate.

“We have received that information and it is an unfortunate situation. Already, an investigation is ongoing and we are committed to ridding the streets of criminal elements.

“Again, we are not deterred and we are committed to ensuring that criminal-minded persons will account for their actions,” said the PPRO.

When our reporter visited the area on Thursday morning, people were seen in clusters discussing the unfortunate incident.

The tragedy, our reporter recalls, is the fourth of such incidents in January after a young lady was murdered on Sunday night and the dismembered body, tucked in a Ghana-Must-Go bag, was dumped by the roadside at Nwaniba area.

Similarly, a woman was reportedly killed at the banking area of Sir Udo Udoma and a male at Ikot Oku Ikono junction in the Uyo metropolitan in the past two weeks.

Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has read riot acts to criminals in the State, warning that no criminal should test the resolve of his administration on security matters.

Eno stated this at a gala night for service commanders who have been transferred from the state, and the newly promoted Military Generals from Akwa Ibom State.

The Governor said, “If criminals believe that Akwa Ibom State is a place for them to hibernate, I am warning them to stay away. We have credible intelligence that there are those living among us. We will come after you and we will use every layer of our intelligence available to track you.”
