Akeredolu Orders Indefinite Suspension Of NURTW Activities In Ondo

BEVERLY HILLS, March 09, (THEWILL) – Following a descent into violence among commercial vehicle operators, Ondo State’s Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has ordered the indefinite suspension of the activities of the local chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

He directed that NURTW members immediately vacate all motor parks across the state.

The Governor had last week said the suspension of NURTW and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) activities in motor parks would only last for two weeks.

However, following the death of one person during renewed violent clashes between factions of the State NURTW members at Ola Garage in Akure on Tuesday morning, the state government announced the indefinite suspension of all activities of the union across the state.

A statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties and Strategy, Dr. Doyin Odebowale, said the decision to suspend NURTW activities indefinitely was based on the unruly and uncultured behaviour of the union leaders.

He said the violent attacks on members and the innocent citizens were unacceptable.

The government, however, said the indefinite suspension did not affect Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria who comported themselves in a peaceful manner.
