January 15, (THEWILL) – President Bola Tinubu on Monday, in Abuja, performed the wreath-laying ceremony to mark the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) celebration, in honour of Nigeria’s fallen heroes at the National Arcade, Eagle Square, Abuja.
The AFRDC is an annual event organised by the Ministry of Defence, to commemorate the country’s fallen heroes, who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of humanity during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, Peace Support Operations around the world, as well as various Internal Security Operations.
All services chiefs, led by the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Christopher Musa, Heads of other security agencies, among others, also took part in the ceremony.
The President was the first to lay a wreath for the fallen heroes. This was followed by the Service Chiefs, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Tajudeen Abbas, the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Kayode Ariwoola, Minister of Defence, Minister of FCT, Nyeson Wike, among others.
The ceremony also witnessed other activities including prayers, gun salutes, and the releasing of pigeons.
After signing the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Anniversary register, President Tinubu released the white pigeons, signifying peace, tranquillity and coexistence for the country
In attendance to witness the ceremony were members of the Federal Executive Council, members of the diplomatic corps, and other dignitaries.
