August 22, (THEWILL) – The abducted District Head of Gatawa District in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Isa Bawa, has died in captivity.
One of his sons confirmed the tragic incident to newsmen in Sokoto on Wednesday.
The monarch, who was kidnapped in July by bandits, was a few days ago seen in a viral video appealing to the Sokoto State Government, Sokoto Sultanate Council, his relatives and friends to help pay ransom for his freedom before the deadline set by his captors.
His abductors had issued a deadline for the payment of ransom, threatening to kill the monarch if their demands were not met.
The traditional ruler, seen in the video with his blood-stained clothes as well as chained hands and legs, pleaded: “I am seeking the help of the government. I am their servant, and I have served them for 74 years, including 45 years in government service. I have always been in the service of the government, and it is the government’s responsibility to help me.”
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has strongly condemned the tragic circumstances leading to the death of the monarch.
In a statement by his Spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu described the savage attack on the traditional ruler as deeply disturbing and a heinous act that will not go without a decisive response.
He extended his profound condolences to the bereaved family, the Gobir Emirate, and the Government of Sokoto State.
The President prayed for the repose of the soul of the traditional ruler and comfort for his family at this difficult time.
Tinubu assured Nigerians that his administration is aggressively removing threats to ensure the security of the nation and that these desperate acts of terror will be effectively countered.
