September 08, (THEWILL) – The Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN) has provided free eye surgery to no fewer than 5,000 vulnerable people in Borno State

Speaking during its 25th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference in Maiduguri during the weekend, the National President of the Association, Prof Ibrahim Oreagba, said the service was part of a week-long event kick-started with a medical outreach.

According to him, he revealed that thousands of the community received free services, including free eye tests, laboratory tests, consultation and medication, among others.

Prof Ibrahim urged healthcare providers to prioritise emotional intelligence through training, role modelling, mentorship and the creation of supportive work environments.

“We rendered free eye surgery for patients at UMTH and general surgery at the state specialist hospital Maiduguri and over 5000 people benefited from our outreach. Aside from this, three years ago, we partnered with the Jigawa State government, where we provided cataract surgery to 3,000 people.

“Our mission and objectives are to support the needy by providing all sorts of intervention to the people, who couldn’t afford the basic medical services.

“A noticeable decline in the use of emotional intelligence in healthcare, affecting the quality of care”, he said.

He also explained that while the association intends to provide comprehensive medical services within the hospitals, it has also decided to take its commitment to the community a step further by offering a free medical outreach programme.

Prof Ibrahim urged the government at all levels, to prioritise enhancing security and economic empowerment to alleviate the impacts of the ongoing global economic crisis and insecurity.

He noted the increasing morbidity, mortality, disabilities and economic losses, resulting from the challenges of providing healthcare amidst a global economic meltdown and insecurity.

Our Correspondent reports that the free medical outreach is part of the association’s bid to create awareness of health, to support the vulnerable and downtrodden.
