November 5, (THEWILL) – Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has declared his intention to wage an uncompromising war against kidnapping, insecurity and corruption, pledging to unite the country and prioritise citizens’ welfare if elected president in the 2027 general election.

Obi made the commitments on Wednesday during a town hall meeting in Calabar, Cross River State, where he outlined the priorities of his proposed administration and promised a different approach to governance.

The former Anambra State governor identified national unity as the foundation for addressing Nigeria’s security challenges and other national problems, lamenting that divisions within the country had weakened its ability to confront the threats facing it.

“Our commitment is to unite Nigeria. Nigeria today is not united. If we unite Nigeria today, we will have the strength to fight insecurity”, he said.

On the worsening security situation, Obi vowed that his administration would not tolerate kidnapping, particularly the abduction of schoolchildren, promising to deploy security agencies to pursue criminals into their hideouts and secure the release of their victims.

He said security operatives would not be deterred by the remote locations where kidnappers operate, insisting that those responsible for abducting schoolchildren would be pursued wherever they sought refuge.

“Anybody that kidnaps schoolchildren and goes into the bush, we will be in that bush with him, wherever it is. We are not scared of him”, he added.

Obi also promised a decisive crackdown on corruption, declaring that public resources would no longer be diverted for personal enrichment at the expense of Nigerians.

He said his administration would pursue those involved in the misappropriation of public funds and ensure that government resources were channelled towards improving the welfare of citizens.

“We will fight corruption head-on. We want people to stop stealing public money. Public money must be used for public good and for the welfare of the people”, he stated.

The NDC candidate further pledged increased investment in education and healthcare, identifying both sectors as critical to national development and the improvement of living conditions.

He said his political partnership represented a new approach to governance, anchored on shared responsibility and a commitment to transforming Nigeria.

“We represent a new Nigeria that is possible. We represent a governance that people have not seen in Nigeria before”, Obi noted.

Explaining the purpose of the town hall meeting, the former governor said it was organised to provide residents with an opportunity to engage directly with him, raise concerns and seek answers to issues affecting their communities.

He urged participants to speak freely, ask questions and express their opinions without restrictions, stressing that the engagement was intended to give the people a voice.

“The style is to listen to you. You are free to ask any question. No restriction. Make any comment. That is why we are here”, he said.

The town hall meeting formed part of Obi’s political engagements ahead of the 2027 general election, as he seeks to present the NDC’s proposed agenda and solicit support for his presidential ambition.

Meanwhile, Obi’s campaign convoy came under attack by hoodlums while travelling to the venue of the town hall meeting in Calabar.

The incident prompted a police response, resulting in the arrest of a 27-year-old man suspected of being among the attackers.

The arrest followed the attack on the presidential candidate’s convoy, although further details of the incident and the suspect’s alleged involvement were not immediately available.
