June 29, (THEWILL) – The African Men’s Sevens Rugby Olympics 2024 Qualifying Championship is scheduled to be held at Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe, from October 16 to 17.
Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, the Black Stallions, will be vying for a spot in the Olympics against tough competition, including South Africa, the reigning world champion, as well as other formidable nations.
According to Azeez Ladipo, General Manager of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), the 12-nation tournament in Zimbabwe will determine which team earns an automatic entry into the Paris Olympics in 2024.
Ladipo acknowledged the challenging nature of the championship and expressed the team’s commitment to giving their best effort. The first-place team will secure qualification for the Paris Olympics, while the second and third-placed teams will participate in a tournament organised by the World Rugby Federation to determine their qualification from that stage.
Nigeria aims to replicate their successful outing in Mauritius, where they secured second place in the African Cup 7s 2024 Paris Olympic Games Qualifiers. In the pre-Olympic qualifying series held in Mauritius, Nigeria’s Black Stallions, unfortunately, fell short in the final, losing to Algeria.
Despite this setback, the team’s strong performance throughout the tournament secured their qualification for the African Cup 7s 2024 Paris Olympic Games Qualifiers.
