BEVERLY HILLS, CA, June 26, (THEWILL) – The Yobe State House of Assembly has called for public support of the Fiscal Responsibility and Public Procurement Bills currently awaiting passage at the Assembly.
The Chairman Joint Public Accounts Committee of the Assembly, Hon. Abdullahi Usman Kukuwa, made the call Thursday at the opening session of the public hearing on the bills in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, stressing the need for public input into the proposed bills before its passage.
“You will all agree with me that for this bill to be effective and to ensure its smooth passage, your contributions as members of the public, civil societies and the media are very key.
“I therefore urge all of you to come up with quality contributions in your presentations so ensure a quality law if successfully passed into law by the house.
“You all know that the importance of this bill to the general public cannot be over-emphasised, just as its passage into law will fine tune the financial prudence and transparent handling of the finances of the state and its resources in general,” Kukuwa said.
In their contribution at the occasion, Abubakar Baba Shehu , representing the Voice and Accountability platform and Comrade Dauda Gombe of the state chapter of Network of Civil Society Organisation, praised the committee for putting together the public hearing.
They however expressed the view that the two bills should be fine tuned to meet with best international financial practices, advising that the Assembly should be involved in rectifying some of the decisions vested in the executive in the bills, especially in areas of hiring and firing of members.
