April 25, (THEWILL) – Xavi Hernandez has reversed his decision to resign as head coach of Barcelona and will fulfil his contract until the conclusion of the 2024/2025 season. The pivotal meeting determining his future took place at Joan Laporta’s residence on Wednesday, where it was ultimately decided that Xavi would continue leading the team.
Having initially tendered his resignation on January 27, with an effective end date of June 30, following a defeat against Villarreal, Xavi believed it was imperative for the team to respond positively to the news. Despite subsequent setbacks such as elimination from the UEFA Champions League and a loss to Real Madrid in a crucial Clasico, the team’s improvement under his leadership has been evident.
The unwavering support from players, fans, and key figures like Deco and Laporta has influenced his decision to reconsider his position. In addition to these, the dedication of the 44-year-old to nurturing young talent amid challenging financial circumstances for the club has been particularly commended.
Breakout seasons from players like Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi, alongside the emergence of Fermin and others, have underscored his commitment to Barcelona’s youth Academy. The specifics of Xavi’s decision to continue coaching remain undisclosed, including any stipulations he may have requested to honour his existing contract, which was extended until 2025 just a few months prior.
Additionally, there are uncertainties regarding Laporta’s terms, as he was reluctant to offer a blank cheque but was determined to retain Xavi at all costs. Changes to the technical team, particularly in player conditioning, are expected to be implemented.
