September 5, (THEWILL) – Xavi Hernandez has agreed a new three-year contract to remain as Barcelona manager until 2026.

The former Blaugrana midfield legend was appointed head coach in November 2021, on an initial deal until 2024. However, after leading Barca to the La Liga title last season, Xavi has been rewarded with an extended stay.

Club president, Joan Laporta, is said to be delighted with how the 42-year-old has guided the team through a difficult period. As well as silverware, Xavi has overseen a transformation in fortunes since replacing Ronald Koeman as substantive manager.

When he arrived from Qatari club, Al Sadd, Barca had won just four of their first 12 league games. But under Xavi, they went 15 matches unbeaten in La Liga, eventually lifting the trophy by a 10-point margin.

This term, despite a busy transfer window, Xavi has kept Barca firing. They remain undefeated after four games to sit joint-second behind Real Madrid, who have the only perfect score in the division and tied with Girona. Securing Xavi’s long-term future is seen as a major boost as the club look to recover from recent struggles both on and off the field.
