December 28, (THEWILL) – Due to a wrist injury, Dominic Thiem will be unable to compete in next year’s Australian Open. The 28-year-old last competed in a tournament in June, when he broke his wrist in the Mallorca Open.
Theim, the 2020 US Open champion, announced on Twitter that his wrist is “in optimal conditions” and that he is “now practising normally with a very good intensity.”
The Australian Open, however, would be too soon for the Austrian, ranked 15th in the world, who stated that his season will begin at the end of January.
“I will start the season in South America at the Cordoba Open in Argentina at the end of January, and will therefore not play this year at the Australian Open,” said Thiem on Twitter.
“We believe this is the right decision in order to have a good return to competition.”
Earlier, on Monday, world number five Andrey Rublev returned a positive COVID-19 test result after featuring in the Abu Dhabi exhibition also putting his participation in the Australian Open in jeopardy.
That Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, will run from January 17th to 30th.
