August 08, (THEWILL) – The French women’s national team continued their strong form at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, defeating Morocco 4-0 on Tuesday, to advance to the tournament’s quarterfinals.
An early onslaught from Les Bleues saw them take a 3-0 lead within the first 25 minutes. Goals from Kadidiatou Diani, Kenza Dali, and Eugenie Le Sommer stunned the North African side. The French controlled possession and peppered the Moroccan goal throughout the first half.
In the second half, Morocco was unable to mount a feeble comeback. France added a fourth goal late in the match as Le Sommer headed in her second of the game. With the result, France has now scored 12 goals through four matches in the tournament, the most they have ever tallied in a Women’s World Cup group stage. They will next face co-host Australia on Saturday, in Brisbane.
Morocco becomes the final African team eliminated in the Round of 16, after Nigeria’s and South Africa’s exits. The match demonstrated France’s quality and depth, as they cruised into the quarter-finals comfortably. Morocco was simply outmatched by the favoured French side. Les Bleues will look to continue their strong form as they pursue a first-ever Women’s World Cup title.
