March 28, (THEWILL) – A collision with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll late in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, has seen Williams Formula One driver Alex Albon issued a three-place grid penalty and two penalty points on his licence.
With three laps remaining, Albon was attempting to pass Stroll for 11th when they collided at the first curve.
Stroll pitted for repairs and finished 13th on the road, while the Williams retired on the spot.
Stroll said: “He dived. I felt like I left room, but I’m not exactly sure.”
However, Albon had no qualms about going for the pass. He opened up saying: “We were trying to fight our way into the points at the end and I went for the move with Lance.
“He made a strong defence and unfortunately, we made contact. We had to retire due to the puncture, but the points were almost there, and we had to go for it.”
But, the stewards determined that Albon was mostly to blame for the collision because he “locked up and collided with car 18 at the apex of the corner.”
As a result, he will receive a three-place grid penalty for the Australian Grand Prix in a fortnight, as well as the first two penalty points of his F1 comeback.
