SAN FRANCISCO, October 20, (THEWILL) – The World Health Organization (WHO) Monday officially declared Nigeria an Ebola-free State.

Nigeria follows Senegal which was officially declared free of the deadly virus on Friday.

WHO Nigerian representative, Rui Gama Vaz, who spoke in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, hailed Nigerian authorities for their aggressive approach that led to the containment of the disease, after a Liberian-American man, Patrick Sawyer brought it to Lagos in July and died a few days later inside a Lagos hospital.

“The virus is gone for now. The outbreak in Nigeria has been defeated.

“This is a spectacular success story that shows to the world that Ebola can be contained but we must be clear that we have only won a battle, the war will only end when West Africa is also declared free of Ebola,” the WHO representative said.
Nigerian confirmed 19 Ebola cases including 7 deaths.

Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone are the three African countries still battling the disease. The WHO says over 4500 persons have died from the disease since the latest outbreak.

The United States and Spain are presently battling to contain the virus after it surfaced there.
