October 20, (THEWILL) – At a capital market conference in Abuja, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) unveiled the Nigeria Capital Market Master Plan 2026–2036 (NCMMP 2.0), setting an ambitious target to grow market capitalisation to ₦750 trillion over the next decade.

A core pillar of the masterplan is the newly unveiled National Savings Scheme, designed to channel retail household savings away from idle cash and into regulated, professionally managed investment portfolios.

The SEC Director-General, Emomotimi Agama, stated that the scheme operates with legal backing under the Investments and Securities Act 2025, with assets to be managed by SEC-registered fund managers.

Unresolved Operational Parameters

While the conference marked a formal policy launch, the National Savings Scheme currently represents a strategic framework rather than a fully operational financial product open to public deposits.

Essential consumer-facing details have yet to be published, including digital onboarding channels, account opening procedures, minimum contribution thresholds, management fee schedules, lock-up periods, and capital protection terms.

Furthermore, proposed tax relief measures depend on formal legislative and executive implementation before retail savers can claim specific tax deductions.

Individual investors should review complete operational guidelines, fee structures, and liquidity conditions before treating the scheme as a direct alternative to conventional bank savings accounts.
