August 19, (THEWILL) – In the first leg of their Europa Conference League play-off against Viborg, Gianluca Scamacca scored his first goal for West Ham, helping the Hammers a 3-1 victory.
The summer acquisition from Sassuolo, took just 24 minutes to score on his official debut, and the Italian international did so with a textbook header from a Maxwel Cornet cross.
Jarrod Bowen’s beautiful goal in the 64th minute, gave the Hammers a two-goal advantage before Jakob Bonde Jensen halved the gap for Viborg. But, West Ham’s two-goal advantage, was restored when Michail Antonio, came on as a substitute to put one in.
West Ham only needed a win to get their season going after two straight losses to start the new campaign and six straight home losses (including last season). Although this victory was hardly convincing, it has nonetheless arrived as expected.
Considering that Moyes made seven changes to the team that lost to Nottingham Forest on Sunday and is currently suspended from the sidelines for kicking the ball at a ballboy during the Europa League semi-final loss to Eintracht Frankfurt the previous season, a mediocre performance was perhaps expected but they have won, which is the important factor.
