West Brom Contacts Police On Racial Abuse Against Midfielder Sawyers

BEVERLY HILLS, January 29, (THEWILL) – English Premier League club West Bromwich Albion have contacted West Midlands Police after English midfielder Romaine Sawyers was sent a racist message during their defeat by Manchester City on Tuesday. The club is working with the authorities to ensure the person who sent the vile message will receive the toughest legal punishment as prescribed.

This will also involve a lifetime ban from The Hawthorns, the home of West Brom.

In an official statement on the matter, the club said: “West Bromwich Albion has today contacted West Midlands Police to report a racist message sent to Romaine Sawyers on social media.

“Everyone at the club is appalled by the abhorrent message which was sent during Tuesday’s Premier League fixture against Manchester City.

“The club has a proud history of confronting all forms of discrimination and will assist the authorities with their inquiries, seeking the toughest available legal punishment, as well as a lifetime ban from The Hawthorns for the individual responsible.

“Albion will offer Romaine the relevant support required at this time and continues with its long-standing commitment to help rid football of racism.

“There is No Room For Racism. Anywhere. Challenge it, report it, change it.”

THEWILL recalls that on Thursday Manchester United sternly condemned racial abuse directed at two of their squad players, Anthony Martial and Axel Tuanzebe, after the defeat to Sheffield United in Wednesday’s EPL fixture. Both players received a massive torrent of racial messages on Twitter and Instagram.

As with the United case, the English FA, which has zero tolerance for these abuses, will have to look into the issues and take the most stringent actions against offenders.
