January 15, (THEWILL) – Barcelona manager, Xavi, has apologised to fans after the Blaugrana side was comprehensively beaten by rivals, Real Madrid, in Sunday’s 2024 Supercopa de Espana final. A first-half hat-trick from Madrid’s Vinicius Junior paved the way for a commanding 4-1 victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s men, who were dominant throughout.

Xavi had gone into the clash confident of securing another trophy under his tenure, but was forced into a humbling admission after the final whistle. “We got the worst game of all. We started very badly and, despite pulling one back, the third Madrid goal made things very difficult,” he stated. “I want to apologise to the fans because we were simply unable to compete.”

The former midfield maestro expanded on his disappointment in the post-match press conference, labelling it “one of the worst games of the season.” He accepted that the team must “improve a lot” if they are to challenge for major honours, and once again issued an apology for the below-par display.

While Xavi rued the manner of the defeat, he hopes it can serve as a learning experience going forward. “There will be plenty of criticism, which we have to accept,” he acknowledged. However, with three trophies still up for grabs this season, the manager backed his squad to recover and “return” to their best in the coming months.
