SAN FRANCISCO, February 08, (THEWILL) – The decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to shift the general elections by six weeks has been hailed.
The Minister of State for Power, Hon. Mohammed Wakil, who applauded the polls shift, said with the decision, INEC had proven that it was a responsive and worthy umpire.
Wakil, who stated this in a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media, Alhaji Olawale Rasheed, said INEC, with the polls shift, had succeeded in stopping what would have turned out as an unworthy election as it was obvious that the electoral body was not fully ready for the February elections.
“INEC has confirmed its readiness to ensure a hitch free conduct of the elections. It also shows that the commission is responsive.”
“Going ahead with the elections would have amounted to grave error, considering the outcry over Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs).”
“There was also the problem of insecurity, training of ad-hoc staff among others,” Wakil said.
