July 13, (THEWILL) – Marketa Vondrousova reached her first Wimbledon final on Thursday, defeating Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-3.
The world number 42 produced a series of stunning winners and drop shots to overpower the Ukrainian in a match that lasted 74 minutes. Svitolina, who returned to tennis just three months after giving birth, had been the darling of the Wimbledon crowd over the last two weeks. However, she was unable to repeat the heroics that saw her take out top seed, Iga Swiatek, in the quarter-finals, as Vondrousova overcame late nerves to clinch a sensational win.
The Czech player got off to a strong start, breaking Svitolina’s serve in the third game of the match. She then consolidated the break and went on to win the first set 6-3. The second set was a much closer affair than the results tell, with both players trading breaks early on. However, Vondrousova broke Svitolina again in the seventh game and then held serve to love to take the set and the match.
Vondrousova will now face Aryna Sabalenka or Ons Jabeur in Saturday’s final.
