September 05, (THEWILL) – Spanish side, Villarreal, have dismissed manager, Quique Setien, after just four matches this season, in which the team secured only one win alongside three defeats.
THEWILL recalls that Setien was appointed in October 2022 following the departure of previous manager Unai Emery to Aston Villa. Under his short tenure, Villarreal finished fifth in La Liga last season and were knocked out in the last 16 of both the Copa del Rey and UEFA Conference League. In a statement, the club thanked Setien for his work and professionalism, highlighting his promotion of young players from the youth team.
Despite qualifying for the UEFA Europa League, Villarreal cited the disappointing results this season as the reason for Setien’s dismissal. The 64-year-old leaves after less than a year in charge. Setien has previously managed the likes of Barcelona, Real Betis and Las Palmas.
Sports director, Miguel Angel Tena, will take over on an interim basis starting on Wednesday, as the club searches for a long-term replacement. Villarreal will be hoping the managerial change can turn around their form as they look to compete both domestically and in Europe this season.
The sacking brings an abrupt end to Setien’s time at the La Liga side, having arrived last October with the tough task of replacing fan-favourite, Unai Emery. However, early results this season have clearly not met the club’s expectations.
