April 30, (THEWILL)- Leicester City were crowned champions of the EFL Championship on Monday evening, with a 3-0 victory over Preston North End at Deepdale. The Foxes had already secured automatic promotion back to the English Premier League after Leeds United’s 4-0 drubbing by Queens Park Rangers on Friday night.
Jamie Vardy netted a first-half brace to put Leicester in control before Kasey McAteer added a third in the 67th minute. It marks the fourth straight season that the Championship has been won by a club relegated from the Premier League the previous campaign.
With the title secured, Leicester have now won the second tier a record eight times, surpassing Manchester City’s previous best of seven Championships/Second Division titles. Brendan Rodgers’ side can reach 100 points if they defeat Blackburn Rovers on the final day when they will lift the trophy.
Leeds United and Ipswich Town are left battling for the final automatic promotion place, currently occupying second and third positions respectively. The pair are aiming to join Leicester in making an immediate return to the EPL next season.
