October 04, (THEWILL) – Liverpool were left distraught after a last-gasp own goal by Joel Matip handed Tottenham Hotspur a 2-1 win at home on Saturday. Matip turned the ball into his own net in the 96th minute after an enthralling contest between the sides.
However, attention has now turned to a disallowed Liverpool goal which has been deemed a “significant human error” by VAR operator Darren England. England ruled out what seemed a legitimate strike from Luis Diaz in the first half for offside when replays showed the Colombian was in fact onside.
To rub salt in the wounds, Liverpool had Curtis Jones sent off earlier in the game. Manager Jurgen Klopp called for a replay of the fixture to maintain “sporting integrity” but the English Premier League is expected to reject that proposal.
The crazy finale overshadowed what was building into an excellent match between the top four rivals. Liverpool will feel aggrieved to come away empty-handed after all their effort during the game. Questions are being asked of the VAR process once again following such a high-profile mistake.
Klopp was left fuming over the mistaken disallowed goal. He said his side “lost because of a wrong VAR decision.” Meanwhile, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou admitted fortune favoured his team, labelling the VAR error “incredible”. This damaging defeat leaves Liverpool trying to pick up the pieces and refocus. The controversial circumstances surrounding the loss only make it harder for Klopp and his players to take.
