September 08, (THEWILL) – Nigerian powerlifter Folashade Oluwafemiayo set a new world record in the women’s over 86 kg category at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. She lifted an incredible 167 kg, surpassing her own previous record of 165 kg.
Oluwafemiayo’s performance earned her the gold medal and marked Nigeria’s seventh medal at the Games. She began with a lift of 157 kg, then broke the Paralympic record with 162kg on her second attempt. Her final lift of 167 kg established the new world benchmark.
The victory was particularly meaningful as Oluwafemiayo served as Team Nigeria’s captain for the Paralympics. Her gold medal capped off a successful campaign for the Nigerian team in Paris.
Unfortunately, Nigeria’s other competitor in the event, Loveline Obiji, was disqualified before the competition began. Obiji had won silver in the same category at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
Oluwafemiayo’s achievement continues her impressive streak of gold medals, following her victory at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics and success at the world championships. Her performance in Paris cements her status as one of the world’s top para powerlifters.
