September 27,(THEWILL) – In a highly anticipated showdown, Mexican superstar, Canelo Alvarez, will put his undisputed super-middleweight titles on the line against American counterpart, Jermell Charlo, who holds all the belts at junior-middleweight, in Las Vegas this weekend.
The 33-year-old Alvarez, already considered an all-time great, will make the third defence of his WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO 168lb crowns against Charlo, who is jumping up two divisions for his chance to make history. A win for the 33-year-old American would see him become only the sixth fighter to capture undisputed honours in two weight classes.
Having turned professional at just 15 back in 2005, Alvarez has amassed an impressive 59-2-2 record whilst capturing world titles in four divisions. The only blemishes came against Floyd Mayweather in 2013 and Dmitry Bivol earlier this year. Charlo meanwhile unified all four belts at 154lbs with a knockout of Brian Castano in May and has a 35-1-1 record.
The mouth-watering match-up, being billed as a battle between two fighters in their prime, is billed for the early hours of Sunday morning. Few fights in recent memory can match it for significance and the winner will have a legitimate claim as the face of modern boxing.
