After suffering a foot injury in a training session on Monday, Barcelona have confirmed that centre-back Samuel Umtiti will undergo surgery.
Umtiti’s career at Barça has been marred by injuries, and he has not played more than 18 times in a season since the 2017/18 season.
The Frenchman has only made one appearance for the Blaugrana this season, playing the full 90 minutes in a 2-2 draw at Osasuna in December, but he is poised to miss more time.
Barcelona made this known in a statement that read: “The first team player Samuel Umtiti took a blow to his right foot in training on Monday and fractured his fifth metatarsal bone.
“The player will undergo surgery on Tuesday with Doctor Antoni Dalmau and with the Club’s medical services supervising. Another press release will be issued when the surgery has taken place.”
Umtiti’s injury has yet to be given a timeframe nor has a return date been provided for the player.
THEWILL recalls that Umtiti recently signed a new contract with Barcelona that reduced his income while also extending his contract by another year to compensate for the compensation cut.
The trade was widely mocked due to Umtiti’s status as a peripheral player whom Barça had been attempting to offload for years, but it was vital for the club to register new recruit Ferran Torres.
Last week, the Spain forward made his debut in Barcelona’s 3-2 loss to Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup. Barcelona’s next match is in the Copa del Rey final 16 on Thursday evening, when they travel to Bilbao to face Athletic Club.
