The United Kingdom government is reportedly planning on partnering with Nigeria’s concert organisers for a more professional touch. This latest development is as a result of the fallout of Damini Ogulu aka Burna Boy’s ‘Lagos Loves Damini’ January 1 concert which was characterized with numerous complaints from attendees.
The Grammy-winning afrobeats singer humiliated concert goers, some of who paid up to N3 million to watch him perform. The self styled African Giant in a trending video could be heard telling fans, “God punish una!” after the crowd booed him for arriving on stage seven hours later for his performance. “If you like no love me, na God go punish una,” he said.
The concert originally scheduled to hold from 6:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m, resulted in an unanticipated extension to the next day after the singer’s delay. Burnaboy would later issue a public apology after he got slammed by Nigerians.
He would later blame the organisational structure and iinfrastructureof the concert orgsnisers as reason for the delay. He added that going forward, he would be working with some investors and stakeholders to forestall future occurrences in other to give his fans top-notch performances.
To this end, the United Kingdom began talks with the organisers of the show towards exploring a partnership that would shore up the entertainment sector in Nigeria. Steps toward the partnership kicked off with a meeting held at the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos.
At the meeting were Creative Economy Catalyst Ltd, the main promoter of Burnaboy’s show, Kaycee Kennedy and the Country Director, UK Department for International Trade, Chim Chalemera.
Kennedy while listing out the positives recorded at the Burnaboy show included the fact that the show was the first African Show listed on Burna Boy’s official website and ticketing.
He pointed out that the show was the biggest outdoor music concert with over 30,000 audiences. He also added that the concert featured the biggest car park ever in an event in Nigeria with over 11,000 cars.
